The hottest trend in discount stores is an idea called the “Bin” store. Many of our customers are starting to open Bin Stores all around the USA. This new concept is so exciting and popular that we decided to cover it in more detail and go over the terminology.
What is a Bin Store?
In its purest form, a Bin Store is a discount retail store most closely aligned with a Treasure Hunt or Black Friday buying frenzy. They do this by “dumping” merchandise into large “dump bins.” A Dump Bin can either be bought or made. If it’s made, it’s usually a large table with a lip to create a bin. That way, when you put merchandise on the table, it stays on it rather than going all over the floor and creating a safety hazard. Dump Bins can also be bought. Quality also goes together with price so the more you pay, the better quality you will get.
How Does Bin Store Pricing Work?
Since everything in the store is flat priced and depends on the day of the week, your job is to figure out what day is what price and what days to restock. Some Bin Store owners choose to close in the middle of the week and start Saturday with the highest pricing. Other owners will flip it around and do the opposite. Here is an example of weekly pricing for a Bin Store with low pricing over the weekend:
- Tuesday – $6.00
- Wednesday – $4.00
- Thursday – $2.00
- Friday – $1.00
- Saturday – $0.25
- Sunday – Closed for Restocking
- Monday – Closed for Restocking
The price of the merchandise changes depending on the day of the week! At the end of the week, the store is cleaned and restocked, and the pricing cycle starts all over again!
What Does a Bin Store Sell?
Bin Stores mainly sell liquidation merchandise. These are products from truckloads that contain overstock, shelf-pulls, and customer returns. Most of the time, the type of merchandise sold in these stores are:
- Electronics
- General Merchandise
- Housewares
- Toys
- Bedding
- Health and Beauty
- Home Improvement
- Office Supplies
- Sporting Goods
- Seasonal
Easy to Start
Bin Stores have a huge advantage over other retail stores because they are easy to set up! Since these stores are treated more like a pop-up store and the merchandise is displayed so differently from a regular store the startup costs are minimal.
